Working as a Resident Assisstant (RA) in a freshman building presents a unique opportunity. After going through my freshman year, I am able to watch 16 girls go through their freshman year.
See on the first day most people do not know anyone else, yes there are some roommates who have known each other for forever, but most people do not know anyone else, so leave your door open and people will come by and say hi. Now all weekend long is orientation at Cobleskill, that is a time where you are in groups with other freshman and this is an other easy time, just do not sit on your phone and remember to say hi.
So now you know some people, which makes it a little more comfortable, these people may not be in your classes, they may not be into the same things but just realize the people you meet right away do not have to be your best friend it is ok, there are plenty of people to find as your best friend, I did not meet mine until mid October.
The first week of classes, you meet more people that now are in your class so you will see them at least once a week. These people can also help you with assignments and missed notes. These people are good to talk to, but even not in the first week does not make it final, it just makes it an easier time to make these connections.
As the semester goes on things do get more routine, it does not seem like this will happen at first, but it will. A routine will form and people find their place, in this time you find people you honestly enjoy hanging out with for whatever reason. Classes form more of a habit and anything else that you do, happens as well.
During midterms, and again in final week(s) the routine gets interrupted, only for a brief moment.
Then as the semester turns to a close and you return the following semester, it is what I find the saddest part, you see how easy it is to say good-bye. College is a strange place where people come and go at different rates, so saying good-bye at people all the time is an other constant. But with every good-bye comes a hello and forever one that leaves, new people comes so new friends are also being made so always say hi.
Every semester some version of this happens as well, you think it will stay the same but on my fourth semester it was the same way, all again.2014-04-07
