Home means different things to different people, so trying to explain homesickness is one of the most difficult things. Everyone will get homesick for different reasons. Some people get it right at the begging of the school year. If this happens one big piece of advice is to get involved. In addition to getting involved have family come visit on the weekends. Whatever you do, do not go home every weekend, that increases homesickness. Also make sure you get off your computer and remember people like to post the best of the best on their Facebook. An open door also is an easy way to meet people.
Personally I will share my troubles with homesickness. I love my family but I also love being out and about, away from home. The long breaks drive me insane when I am home. Still there are things I miss. Part of it is that my home is on the ocean; I miss the beach when I am in Cobleskill. To make myself feel better every time I go home I go to the beach. I also have two dogs at home, and I love cuddling up with my puppies, I miss my puppies when I am here. So I also spend extra time with them when I am home. My best friends and I make sure to keep in contact when I am at school so we know we are not missing anything, even from far away. Finally I miss home a lot in the start of second semester, so I just call home and hear from them, a couple of times a week usually does the trick.
The best thing to cure homesickness is to find out what is causing the homesickness. Few people miss the building of their home, they miss the people inside, the things inside, the activities done, and the pets inside. Once you identify what is actually causing the feeling attempt to replicate it at college. If nothing else mention it to someone, people bond over homesick feelings.
Everyone gets homesick, that is the most important thing to realize. You are not alone when you are homesick. Breathe deep, because everyone feels homesick at some point.2014-02-17
