My name is Lizzy and I live in a fishing city north of Boston, Massachusetts called Gloucester, Massachusetts. I got an amazing opportunity for high school to go to a school that every student was enrolled in an agricultural focus and every other day I got to learn agricultural topics. I originally went there because I wanted to be a vet but once there I fell in love with plant science, specifically landscaping. In my junior year of high school I learned about landscape design and decided that is what I wanted to do. I looked for schools with a four year landscape program and there were none in Massachusetts. A couple of two year programs but I wanted a four year program. I also wanted to be away from home, so I looked out of state.
Looking out of state gave me the out of state tuition, so one big thing I had to watch was cost. I first found SUNY ESF/ Syracuse. I went there and I liked it, it was nice. It was very focused though and if I wanted to change majors I would need to change schools. But it was the only option I found and so a focused school was better than no school.
My high school had an FFA chapter (formerly Future Farmers of America), and my senior year I got the chance to go to national convention. One of the teachers on the trip graduated from Cobleskill and brought us all to the Cobleskill booth. There I learned about the school and became interested. I applied because I had to start applying and it was another option.
On New Year’s Eve I got the acceptance package and I stayed up all night and rang in the new year, excitedly doing all the research I could on SUNY Cobleskill. My mom and I also planned to drive out and check it out. We made a day trip of it and once I got to Cobleskill, I loved it. Everything about it. Right away it just was so perfect.
I decided on SUNY Cobleskill for the distance to my house is perfect for me, they had the major I wanted at the time, they are a small school which I needed, and I loved the more rural feel of it.
Since then I have decided to change my major, but I have also decided to stay at SUNY Cobleskill because the longer I am here the more I fall in love. Every day here is by no means perfect, but it is amazing.2013-09-03
