Now that I am back in Cobleskill, and finished packing, I guess it is a good time to reflect on these past 9 days.
So after checking people out of my building and moving out myself the group of students (six of us) stayed in Dix hall on Saturday night. On Sunday the seven us (six students plus the adviser) loaded up the van and drove down to Newark New Jersey. This was an opportunity presented to me through the Community Service Club. Over our week of spring break we, along with 50 other college students from around the US volunteered our time.
The Cobleskill group worked at a preschool in the morning and then helped out at the Boys and Girls Club (which is where we also stayed in the afternoon).
The people we helped with were in a category called ALIYES, Asset Limited Income Constrained Yet Still Employed. 80% of the kids we worked with were a single parent family. Most of those were the grandparents even, very few of them actually had parents involved in their lives. You could see it, even in the three-year-old face, they knew we were different and they appreciated us there.
No matter how long this blog was I could never convey how much this has touched me as a person, one highlight of the whole week, even with going to NYC twice, was on Tuesday I taught my class. It was a crazy experience showing up on the second day there and no one being there so I was put in charge, but once I got into it I loved it.
On the way back today we were asked to put some thoughts down to describe to people who have never been. It was definitely the most rewarding spring break I have ever had, I grew so much as a person, and now I am confirmed in my life path.
